I have used high quality heat transfer vinyl (Siser), which is CPSIA certified safe on the product. It can be washed at 40 degrees, more than 50 times, 30 minutes/time. It can withstand multiple washings. Do not iron straight onto the vinyl, turn inside out. Do not tumble dry.
